Bird of Wood Art
Both of the above woodcarvings are made from 200+ year old American Chestnut wood salvaged from old homes structural beams. Each was design and crafted to show a section of what in nature would be a full tree trunk with a natural cavity. A hidden hatch allows a view into the nest, which contains actual natural materials utilized by Chickadees to build their nest. There are also eggs made from wood.

Crafted from the nearly extinct American Chestnut. I used a block of wood salvaged from an old foundation beam. This beautiful block of wood was likely more than a 150 years old and the fine grain begged to be displayed. Keeping from heavy detailing and painting of the wood, I aimed to preserve and feature the patterns created by the woodgrain flow. A linseed oil and wax mixture was applied to the surface to only preserve and accentuate. Quality glass eyes are inserted and an eye lid was formed by hand with epoxy clay. The legs are accurate pewter casts made in the USA from real birds. A natural locust post was used to showcase the bird. It all measures about 15 inches long by 8 inches tall, excluding the base. The "Big Nose Crow" is suitable for special occassions dressing, such as Christmas and Hallowing. It comes with a custom crafted "Sir" felt Jacket and top hat.
